Starting and running an affiliate web site or any online business does not have to be expensive, but it is not free.

The first thing that I would suggest to you would be to figure out your funding. It is not very expensive to start your own on line business, but it is not free.

• Domain Name Registration - From $5 to $14 dollars per year.
• Hosting Company - From $7 to $45 dollars per month.
• Advertising - Anywhere from $4 to unlimited

As you can see it takes very little up front money to get your business up and running. I want to tell you how I cover all these costs, without taking any money out of my pocket

I can’t stress this enough. The first thing you need to do is join the free survey sites listed below, fill in their short profiles, and start taking some surveys. If you don’t already check your email everyday, you will now. It is the easiest way to make some money on line.

I now belong to 4 survey sites that make me on average $20-40 a month, sometimes more. Not only are my hosting and domain name covered, but I am also able to spend some money promoting my site to the world. What type of company do you want to run?

By now you have joined the survey sites, and will start receiving invitations to participate soon. Next step is to figure out what it is you are going to sell. Do you have your own product? If so, this section will be usefully in adding more content to your site, meaning more chances to earn some money.

Be aware, you should have some knowledge of HTML (the language web pages are written in). If you don’t I would suggest doing a little search, maybe even get an HTML for dummies type book. Remember you are trying to start a business based on the web, you should know how web pages are created.

Will you build your own site, or use a template?

Your web site is the most important part of running an on line business. Your site is really your store front, and a visitors first impression of your company.

Now it is time to create your web site. Don’t get discouraged, it is not as hard as it sounds.
Using templates and pre-formated affiliate links make this mainly a cut and paste job.

You are going to need to know some basics about writing web pages. If you don’t know anything about HTML it is time to learn. I would suggest getting some books, or just taking some on line tutorials on HTML. You just need to know enough to be able to cut and paste, and know where to cut and paste.

There are many free HTML editors available so I will not list them here. I will tell you that I used the free version of AceHTML to design my site.

To view the pages you are designing you will need a web server on you computer. The best web server available is FREE. With a web server running on your PC, you will be able to test your site before uploading it to you hosted site.

Apache is an open source web server that runs on windows and Linux.

I suggest templates to start
It is rewarding to design you own site. To create something from scratch always gives me a sense of accomplishment. This is entirely up to you. Are you creative? Do you know how to design a web page?

Don’t worry if you answered no to both of those questions. There are many free templates available on line for you to choose from. To start I would search the web for some templates that interest you and play with them in whatever HTML editor you choose to use.

Choosing the right web site hosting company for you.

There are so many companies out there that offer web hosting, that it really pays to do your research. Most of the hosting providers are reputable and stable, but there are a few bad eggs on line. I will not go into who is good and who is bad, I just want to help you to understand the importance of research.

First thing you need to do is figure out what features you will need on your web site.

• How much space do you need?
  If you are going to run a simple web portal, under 20 pages with affiliate links and good content, then you probably don’t need more then 10MB.
  Are you going to be happy with a simple web interface?
  Some hosting companies offer great web management pages that make running your site easy. I really like the companies that offer CPANEL for site management. This is the easiest interface for novices and experts to use. CPANEL includes great site statistics tools as well
• Do you want FTP access to your site?
  If you are going to become a successfully affiliate marketer you need to be efficient in your web site management. Having FTP access to your site will make your life much easier. Most HTML editors will have an FTP plugin making it easy to transfer your site from your PC to your hosted web server.
• Do you want to have multiple sub domains hosted?
  If you are going to host more than one site, it is a good idea to check that the hosting company you choose will allow sub domains. The good hosting providers offer some free sub domains.
• Will you want server side scripting like PHP, Perl, ASP?
  Server side scripting may become an important part of your site, even if you don’t know about it yet. It is almost a standard now to offer these services, but I would make sure your hosting provider does offer them in case you need them in the future.
